The saxophone is the closest thing to the human voice as far as I can tell and the sound that comes out is individual to the player just as is the voice.
Whatever made me pick up that sax keeps me from being able to put it down for long. The best sax players throughout the relatively short history of the instrument continue to inspire those of us who play this crazy horn to push forward with new ideas and a closer connection to what makes us tick.
Perhaps you found this site looking for some great sax in San Diego. I have some music for you to listen to and I also keep a listing of any upcoming public gigs over there on the right sidebar.
I usually perform with my quartet but also do a fair amout of work with other bands and sometimes just perform solo with backing tracks.
I also do a fair share of private events with my group and many others. For anyone interested in live music for an event, please see my Bookings page.
If you would like to be informed of where I am performing, I send out an occasional email. There's a sign up for that somewhere around here.
“There’s plenty of Stan Getz in his airy tone and lyric style, but, to his credit, Lessman pushes beyond these Getz trademarks. By blending elements of music from slick-sounding Southern California, where he used to live, with a grittier influence of musical Chicago, where he’s now based, Lessman produces a worthy style of his own”.Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
I want to thank you for a wonderful performance this weekend. I always appreciate working with professional band leaders that are poised to exceed my clients expectations. To quote my client, "The Mark Lessman group was a perfect compliment to the essence of the evening...just right.".
Thank you again.
